EcoSmart Fire XL500 Bioethanol Burner

The smallest of our linear bioethanol burners. The XL500 holds 5L of fuel, burns for up to 13 hours and drops into media units, cabinetry and stonework — indoors or out.

  • 5L bioethanol burner with a 500mm linear flame
  • 3kW heat output — warms rooms up to 40m²
  • Burns 10–13 hours on a single fill
  • No flue, chimney or gas connection needed
  • Grade 304 stainless steel, in stainless or black
  • Works indoors and out (indoor installs require the XL500 Top Tray)

Two finishes. Same burner.
Stainless steel disappears into the build — Grade 304, brushed, at home in stone and concrete. Black is powder-coated steel that frames the flame and suits dark cabinetry and media walls. Pick the room, not the burner: both are the same Ecosmart Fire XL500 bioethanol burner underneath.

EcoSmart Fire XL500 Bioethanol Burner

About this bioethanol burner

EcoSmart Fire XL500 Bioethanol Burner

The smallest burner in the XL Series. Still a proper fire.
The XL500 holds five litres of bioethanol fuel. One fill gives you a flame that stretches the full 500mm of the burner and burns for ten to thirteen hours. No flue. No chimney. No gas line. Set it in place, fill it, light it.

Designers use this burner as a tool. Drop it into a media unit under the TV. Set it into a concrete bench or a marble recess. The body is Grade 304 stainless steel, so it sits comfortably with almost any material you build around it. Use it indoors or outside — and if the build is indoors, the XL500 Top Tray is a required part of the installation, not an optional extra.

Prefer to skip the joinery? The XL500 drops straight into EcoSmart's zero-clearance Flex firebox inserts, which handle the enclosure for you. And if 500mm of flame isn't enough, the same ethanol burner comes in 700, 900 and 1200mm widths. We'd start with the XL500 for most media walls. It's the size most rooms actually suit.

Everything you need is in the box: a 5L jerry can with a bottle adaptor for refuelling, a lighting rod, a fire lighter and a set of XL baffles to regulate the flame. The XL500 is OMNI-Test listed to UL 1370 and certified by BSI to EN 16647.

Care & Safety for EcoSmart XL500 Bioethanol Burners

Looking after your XL500 Bioethanol Burner

Light the burner with the fire lighter through the lighting rod, and use the same rod to adjust the slider and put the flame out. Never lean over the burner to do it. Slot the XL baffles in to regulate and steady the flame; take them out for the fullest flame. Outdoors, the burner is ready as it comes. Indoors, fit the XL500 Top Tray before operating: it protects against heat transference and catches accidental spillage.

Fuel safety

Fill only through the dedicated filling point, using the 5L jerry can and bottle adaptor. Safety markings and volume guides show the maximum fill line. Let the burner cool fully before you refill. Use bioethanol fuel only — we recommend e-NRG.

EcoSmart XL500 Frequently asked questions

What is an XL500 bioethanol burner?

A bioethanol burner (some people write it "bio ethanol burner") is a burner that runs on bioethanol fuel instead of wood or gas. You fill it, light it and get a real flame. No flue, chimney or fixed installation. The XL500 is a bioethanol burner with a 5L capacity and a 500mm linear flame.

What's the difference between a bioethanol burner and a bioethanol fireplace?

A fireplace is the whole unit: enclosure, surround and burner. An ethanol fireplace burner like the XL500 is the engine inside. Buy the burner when you're building your own setting — a media unit, a bench or a firebox insert.

Can I use the XL500 ethanol burner indoors?

Yes. The XL500 is rated for indoor and outdoor use. Indoors, you must fit the XL500 Top Tray before operating it, and your room needs to be at least 80m³, roughly a standard open-plan living room.

How long does the XL500 burn on one fill?

Ten to thirteen hours from the full 5L. It consumes fuel at 0.5 litres per hour, and fitting the XL baffles stretches the burn towards the top of that range.

How much heat does the XL500 produce?

3kW, or 11,430 BTU/h. On average it heats around 40m², so it takes the chill off a living room rather than replacing central heating.

Can I use the XL500 as a bioethanol burner insert in my own design?

Yes. That's what it's built for. Cabinetry, media units, stone benches, pillars. Check the physical model dimensions against your cut-out before installation, and fit the Top Tray for any indoor build.

Does the XL500 need a chimney, flue or electricity?

No. Nothing but the burner and the fuel. That's what makes it a design tool: it goes where a chimney never could.

What fuel does the XL500 use?

Bioethanol fuel. We recommend e-NRG. The included 5L jerry can and bottle adaptor make refuelling straightforward.

Is the XL500 safe?

It's OMNI-Test listed to UL 1370, certified by BSI to EN 16647 and compliant with the ACCC Safety Mandate. Day to day: a dedicated filling point, safety markings, volume guides and a shut-off you operate with the lighting rod.

What's the difference between the XL500 and the VB2?

Different jobs. The VB2 drops into an existing traditional cast iron fireplace. The XL500 is a linear burner for bespoke builds — media walls, cabinetry, stonework. Converting an old fireplace? Choose the VB2. Building something new? The XL500.

Is the XL500 an ethanol burner or a bioethanol burner?

Same thing. Bioethanol is the full name of the fuel. Ethanol burner is the shorthand EcoSmart themselves use for the range. One burner, two names.
