Collection: EcoSmart XL Bioethanol Burners

The XL Series is our range of linear bioethanol burners. Four lengths — 500, 700, 900 and 1200mm. One idea: a real flame that fits the build, not the other way round.

Every XL burner is Grade 304 stainless steel, runs on bioethanol fuel and needs no flue, chimney or gas connection. Set one into bespoke cabinetry, a media unit or a stone bench. Drop it into a zero-clearance Flex firebox insert. Use it indoors or out.

EcoSmart call them ethanol burners. We call them bioethanol burners. Same burner, two names. You'll find both on this site.

About the XL Bioethanol Burner Series

Four lengths, one standard
Every XL burner shares the same build: Grade 304 stainless steel, a dedicated filling point and XL baffles to regulate the flame. What changes is the length. The XL500 fits compact media units at 500mm. The XL700 is the burner inside the Grate 36 and many Flex firebox inserts. The XL900 is one of the most popular sizes for wide media walls and commercial spaces. The XL1200 runs a 1200mm flame across the biggest builds: hotels, restaurants, feature walls.

No flue. No chimney. No gas line.
Bioethanol is a clean-burning fuel. The flame produces heat, water vapour and a small amount of CO₂. No smoke, no soot, no ash. That means no flue and no fixed connection — an XL burner works in rooms a chimney never reaches, from fourth-floor flats to garden rooms.

Built for bespoke builds
Set an XL burner into cabinetry, a media unit, a floating timber shelf or a stone bench. Concrete, marble and stacked stone all work around it. Use it indoors or out. Indoors, the matching Top Tray is a required part of the installation, not an optional extra. Always check the physical model dimensions against your cut-out before you build.

Tested worldwide
Every XL burner is OMNI-Test listed to UL 1370, certified by BSI to EN 16647 and compliant with the ACCC Safety Mandate. The series won the 2009 Hearth & Home Vesta Award.

Frequently asked questions

Is an ethanol burner the same as a bioethanol burner?

Yes. Bioethanol is the full name of the fuel. Ethanol burner is the shorthand EcoSmart use for the range. Same burner, two names.

Do bioethanol burners need a flue or chimney?

No. Bioethanol burns clean, so there's no smoke and nothing to vent. The flame produces heat, water vapour and a small amount of CO₂. Minimum room sizes apply indoors: 80m³ for the XL500, up to 115m³ for the XL1200.

Which size XL burner do I need?

Match the length to the build. XL500 (500mm) for compact media units. XL700 (700mm) for most living rooms, and it's the burner the Grate 36 takes. XL900 (908mm) for wide media walls and commercial spaces. XL1200 (1200mm) for the biggest rooms and hospitality builds.

How long does an XL burner burn on one fill?

Between 8 and 14 hours, depending on the model and how you set the baffles. Tanks run from 5L (XL500) to 10L (XL1200), consuming 0.5 to 0.87 litres per hour.

Are bioethanol burners safe to use indoors?

Yes, with two conditions. Fit the matching Top Tray, which protects against heat transference and catches spills, and make sure your room meets the minimum size. Every XL burner is OMNI-Test listed to UL 1370 and BSI certified to EN 16647, with a dedicated filling point and a shut-off you operate with the lighting rod.

Can I install an XL burner myself?

The burner itself needs no flue, gas or electrical connection, so there's nothing to wire or plumb. Setting it into a simple fire surround is a straightforward job. Building it into bespoke cabinetry or a media wall is joinery. Most customers have a joiner or builder make the enclosure and drop the burner in afterwards. Either way, check the physical dimensions against your cut-out before you build.
